Springtime is here, and that means that bears are awakening from their winter slumber. When they wake up, they’re very hungry. Often a bear will initially eat some fresh grass sprouts in order to help purge their system of whatever they last ate that is languishing in their digestive tract.

Do something long enough, and the basics become so much a part of your being that it’s easy to forget that others may not be so enlightened. I am constantly amazed when someone tells me that they do not know there is a difference between factory ammunition, even for bullets of identical weight.

I’ve just finished a visit with an old friend. Alan Roberts and I were once neighbors, and because we share a passion about guns and hunting, we have remained friends for more than 25 years. Alan is nuts about bird hunting and has done time as a guide at some pretty high-end bird hunting preserves.

Moments ago I received one of those e-mails that smacks you in the face, as if someone threw a basketball at you. James Guthrie—who used the byline of J. Guthrie—has passed away at the age of 37. Guthrie worked for me when I was the Editor-in-Chief of Shooting Illustrated. To say that he lived life to its fullest is a severe understatement.

One of the things I do around the Wyoming homestead besides shooting guns and critters is play farmer. It gives me pleasure to tend the land, and it enhances the habitat for the wild creatures that share this place with me. Too be sure, I am not—and I make no pretense of being—a real farmer.

Why I Love the .44 Special

I mostly lurk in several shooting forums on the Internet; occasionally I’ll chime in on something if I feel I have something to say that hasn’t been said. One particular forum has some fellas waxing about the .44 Spl. One gentleman said that it wasn’t until quite recently that he realized the .44 Spl isn’t all about some bloviating gun writers’ line of bovine residue.

Bullets Do Not Expand

We gunners like to think of ourselves as very precise and accurate, especially when we talk of guns and such. Much froth and furor are put forth when we hear someone say “assault weapon” instead of “semi-auto rifle,” or “clip” when they mean “magazine,” or “bullet” when referring to a “cartridge.” The misidentifying examples are almost endless.

Gun owners have been taking a beating lately—both in the media as well as from some legislatures. But we've recently scored a victory. My home state of Wyoming passed a bill to decriminalize the use of suppressors while hunting wildlife. We joined 24 other states that recognize that it should not cost one his or her hearing just to be a hunter.
